TITLE: Choose Friends Wisely

Main Point – Wrong friends can get you locked up.

Main Verse(s):

The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

~ Proverbs 12:26

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,

~ Psalms 1:1

(Similar to physical prisons these things shadow spiritual prisons)

Point 1:  Friend’s influence

  • Thoughts and Opinions
  • Attitude and actions
  • Language

Proverbs 12:26 - The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray.

Point 2:  Choosing right friend is just as important as not choosing the wrong friend.

  • Support
  • Motivation
  • Stretch You

Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpens Iron, so one person sharpens another

Proverbs 17:17 – A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need

Proverbs 17:56 - An open rebuke is better than hidden love! Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.

Point 3:  How to choose friends wisely?

  • Pray to God
  • Jesus is the model
  • Holy Spirit helps you discern

Proverbs 22:24-25 – Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.

Main Conclusion:

Wrong friends will lead you into trouble and in the end either can’t or won’t help you get out of it.

In the end - Keep your freedom from spiritual prison:  CONFESS, ASK FORGIVENESS, and REPENT
